My doctor said I needed that stomach surgery and I don't want it. My bmi is 45.

I'd have to say I feel pretty strongly that you should never let a doctor, or anyone else, talk you into doing something so drastic as surgery. If you want it, that's one thing, but for your doctor to recommend it, well, if you said no and he/she persists, that would be unethical. It's okay for them to say they think it might be something to consider, but once you say you're not interested, that should be the end of it.

Trouble is, surgeons recommend surgery. Of course they do; that's how they make their living. So if you're sitting in a surgeon's office, you'll probably walk out with a recommendation for surgery.

What's most interesting about the WLS (weight loss surgery) is that many people are required to lose weight prior to the actual surgery. I've wonder though, if they can lose weight before the surgery, why not just keep going?

It's the emotional stuff that gets in the way. Learn to use EFT and you can start chipping away at some of your "stuff."

If you have any "issues" in particular, send them to me, and I'm happy to write about them. I often get ideas for The Daily Bites from e-mails and questions people send.

Warmly,
Kathryn

WLS doesn't really solve much in the long run.

It may cause a focus off of food or just delay that focus.

I have two close friends who both had Gastric Bypass. Both lost TONS of weight! One has developed a drinking problem. The other has kept eating poorly and never reached his goal and is already gaining weight back again.

WLS can be a great resource for restricting your intake, but you really need to deal with the underlaying problems causing you to eat.

I couldn't agree with you more. I know there is a small element of "counseling" for WLS patients, but not nearly enough. I would love to work with more WLS patients, both before and after surgery.

Perhaps you could offer the idea of learning EFT to your friends, just to see what happens? I know though that often they have already reached the stage where they feel enough is enough, and now, after surgery, offering one more idea can just be the last straw, so tread lightly!
